Materials & Suggestions for a successful workshop experience at Great Camp Sagamore, Raquette Lake New York are as follows:

MATERIALS LIST

We will be working plein air with easels provided; however, if you have a favored field easel please feel free to bring it along. You'll be doing color mixing exercises and learning professional fine art techniques used by the master painters such as John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet, and Vincent Van Gogh. Materials need not be extensive. I work in oils, but you could use any medium with which you are familiar. If you are not using oils, then you will know what you need for your chosen media. I recommend formats between 8x10 –16x20

pallette to hold and mix paints, if you have a palette with a cover that is a real bonus because you can pre-load it before going painting to reduce the items carried into the field as well as the weight.

backpack or large bag to carry easel and materials.

Paints :

It's recommended you have the following colors

At least 37ml tubes of oils or acrylics recommended

EXCEPT WHITE- YOU WILL NEED at least 1 150ml tube of white (zinc/titanium/even underpainting white)

cadmium yellow light (or lemon or pale) and yellow ochre

cadmium red

alizarin crimson (or quinacridone rose)

ultramarine blue and curealan blue

burnt sienna

raw sienna

lamp black

burnt umber -

thalo green and/or veridian

sap green

permanent green light

cadmium orange – I recommend getting a very good one like grumbacher pre-tested

Dioxazine purple or permanent mauve(very important!)

and your favorites you just can't live without

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND UTRECHT brand paints.  Great quality and pigment saturation, very economical.

painting medium for thinning paint (liquin, BOILED linseed oil)

REAL Distilled spirits of TURPENTINE (hardware store) or Grumtine(grumbacher)- no paint thinner please - No turpenoid please.  It sometimes has poor reactions with surfaces and pigments

brushes

Natural Hair Bristles or Synthetics

I prefer round hog hair(white bristle) and sable(synthetics are good these days) or blended hair but use your favorite type as well.(no FAN BRUSHES)

Also a wide selection of FILBERTS (flats with corners rounded off) and a few of your personal magic brushes.

I usually only take two to three brushes when painting outdoors.  A small round(5 or 6) a large flat(12) for knocking in large areas and a large round (10) -Realistically this is all you need.  I recommend it.

Simplify your materials when possible

PAINTING SUPPORTS ?  CANVAS-  PANELs-  EVEN MOUNTED COTTON PAPER

tempered masonite (1/4 inch)  circa 8x10" to 16x20" range or similar dimension canvas panel, boards and or canvases. you choose.  One note, canvas boards are handy but coat the backs with acrylic paint because the cardboard backing absorbs water and can warp the boards.  Prevent it before it happens.

please prepare your supports with a rose, brown or olive drab underpainting color at least 2 weeks before we leave (Aug 20,2006).  The underpainting color should be about a 20-35% value darkness(estimate) if white is 0% and black is 100%

To prepare your ground just mix your color with some turps and brush on while the piece is vertical.  Usually it needs to be darker than you might think as the white of the board will come through this veil if it is very thin.

Rain gear/coat/poncho

cotton rags(sheets), high synthetic content and / or polyester rags work poorly vs. flannel

masking tape to prevent us from painting to close to the edge of our formats.(optional)

Useful Extras

Wet-ones, Gunk or other grease remover (orange miracle brand) to remove paint from your hands, etc.

note pad or journal to record your thoughts (optional)

Naturally, you'll want to bring what is needed for the workshop. But, also consider whether you will want to do some painting on your own. There are some wonderful painting spots near the Sagamore grounds which are restricted to guests and tour groups as well as off the grounds on the lakeshore. Bring any other items you would customarily use when painting out on location.  (stool, water bottle etc)

Important Considerations:

Painting clothes - I expect you to get them dirty.

Bug spray (this time frame was designed around a beautiful bug-free season but they may not know that)

Wide brimmed hats help reduce the angle at which light can enter your eyes reducing the perception of color that is in fact generated from light bouncing around inside the eye itself.

Hiking boots or athletic shoes - wool socks, bowling shoes(bowling alley is available)

Slippers/bathrobe/toiletries/medications/pre-paid phone card (cell service may not be available)

Towels are provided but you may wish to bring your own as well

Camera, flashlight , extra batteries, battery powered reading light. Digitals are GREAT but bring a 35mm too. Last year I wanted to do some time lapse exposures and it was very difficult with the digital.  Live and learn

Wool sweater and warm winter hat (Dress for what is 0ctober weather in Western NY).  Adirondacks may be turning fall colors so may the temps. ( Last 2 years averaged about 70 degrees daytime temps)

Favorite wines or other beverages.  The town of Raquette Lake has many items you can pick up at the local stores however they are limited in the variety.  Saranac beer is available as well as some nice wines on the Sagamore grounds.

Wallet with ID / credit card and pocket money for souvenirs from Sagamore's very nice gift shop and local items you may want to pick up.  Many items are on sale at the gift shop late season !!!

A box to stack your wet paintings for the trip home. Clothespins are good for separating panels during transit. Painting/ Drawing Sessions will be from 9:00 am to noon  then 1:00 pm to 3:45 and  we will have a group discussion / critique in the late afternoon over a glass of wine or tea/coffee around 3:45 -4:15 .  The rest of the day is yours to explore/ paint, canoe, hike, go into town or whatever and simply soak up this wonderful place. Critique session is of course optional but I encourage everyone to attend, it’s really a great time to learn and share what you have painted with all of us.  When we arrive I encourage you to tour the grounds and look for potential masterpieces waiting to be painted.  I accept participants in any medium, even digital photography.

Art is just the residue of thought –the medium is independent.

Sagamore Grounds & Artist Workshop Fee

A 25% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your place in this workshop.  In extraordinary situations and in the event the space can be filled with another participant a refund will be permitted.  Sagamore fees and instructor fees are paid separately.

Always remember:

Avoid Frustration: and use the medium with which you are most comfortable. I will teach using oils, but I am happy to accommodate any medium you choose.
